MBN Home Page New this week: Colocasia esculenta 'Elena' this is a clumping form that has a glowing lime green leaf. In shadier conditions it looks like a regular green taro but it grows better than that form. rev 7/2008 *NEW for 2008!*
Dianella caerulea 'Cassa Blue' PPAF (above) wider leaves and better color than the species. Upright, powder blue foliage to 16". rev 7/2008 *NEW for 2008!* when I get back: Helleborus orientalis 'Royal Heritage', Libertia peregrinans 'Goldfinger,' Dombeya 'Seminole', Echeveria 'Rosea', Musa 'Truly Tiny,' and the hot new Musa 'Siam Ruby' \*********************************************************************** New last week:
Canna 'Striped Beauty' (above) subtly striped leaves the veins form faint white lines against clear deep green. Flowers are yellow, plants only get a couple of feet high. rev 7/2008 *NEW for 2008!*
Canna 'Tangelo' (above) compact growth, to just a couple of feet high. Clear light orange flowers. rev 7/2008 *NEW for 2008!*
Dahlia 'Bride to Be' (above) a 4" white waterlily, with wide petals and a strong habit to 5'. rev 7/2008 *NEW for 2008!* Dahlia 'Karma Choc' I can't get a picture of this one because it sells before it starts to open. It is a black, black red against dark purple foliage. There really isn't anything else like it. Dahlia 'Taboo' a 4" wide, very rich, deep purple that sells before I can get a picture. Purple is popular and this is a good one. To 4', well branched and makes a nice looking plant. rev 7/2008 *NEW for 2008!*
Echinacea Big Sky Sundown' (above) intense orange fading to apricot or tawny peach, with rose magenta petal bases.
Echinacea 'Big Sky Twilight' (above) a luminous red, petals shading to magenat pink. rev 7/2008 *NEW for 2008!*
Echinacea 'Kim's Knee High' (above) a very compact plant, often under knee high in California, even with age. It has deeply reflexed petals and blooms heavily. Cute! rev 7/2008 *NEW for 2008!*
Mandevilla SunParasol 'Giant Crimson' PPAF (above) an improved red, larger than 'Crimson' but otherwise just as excellent. rev 7/2008 NEW for 2008!* ![]() Penstemon 'Violet' (above) violet purple, large white centers. rev 7/2008 *NEW for 2008!* Phoenix sylvestris SILVER DATE PALM a fast, tall palm, to 25-35' tall, much smaller in spread and much more graceful than a Canary Island Date Palm. The leaves are conspicuously grey, about 10' long but quite narrow, and again the trunk in this species is quite delicate relative to its monster brother. It comes from dry territory and is quite drought tolerant. Good in containers too, but spiny at the base of the frond. Full sun, Sunset zones 8-9, 14-24. Central Asia. rev 10/2007 *NEW for 2008!*
Spilanthes 'Peek A Boo' (above) a tender tropical perennial, treat it as a showy, fast annual for spectacular summer color/foliage effects. Little button-like yellow flower heads, with orange centers, are produced until frost. Full sun, regular watering, a natural for combos or baskets. rev 7/2008 *NEW for 2008!*
